Campgrounds in Yellowstone National Park
If you’re in search of a more rugged experience for your trip to Yellowstone, the park has 12 front-country campgrounds with over 2,000 campsites! Camping is my favorite way to experience the park, and Yellowstone has a variety of sites to choose from.
All campsites must be reserved in advance, with the exception of Mammoth Campground between October 15-April 1st when it is first-come, first-served. It’s best to make your reservations as early as possible because they will book up in advance.
Campsites can be reserved through Yellowstone National Park Lodges while others can be reserved through Recreation.gov and range in price from $20-$89 per night.

Vacation Rentals Near Yellowstone National Park
Private rentals, like Airbnb or VRBO, are another great way to stay during your trip! Some of the perks of a vacation rental are that it gives you more space to relax and gives you the flexibility to cook your own meals. The con is that you will spend more time commuting from your rental to the park, but for some, that’s a reasonable sacrifice.
Reasons You Should Get a Vacation Rental for Your Yellowstone Trip:
- More affordable for groups
- More comfortable than camping
- Space to unwind and relax
- Having a kitchen means you can cook your own meals

How Many Days Do You Need to Visit Yellowstone National Park?
Looking at Yellowstone on a map, it can be hard to tell just how big the park really is. Yellowstone is 3,472 square miles or 2,221,766 acres. That’s bigger than Rhode Island and Delaware combined!
I recommend a bare minimum of 3 nights when visiting the park, but ideally, I would recommend 4-6 nights if you want to explore all of the main sights and have time to hike or watch wildlife as well.
There is so much to see and do in Yellowstone! If you want to see it all, keep that in mind when deciding where to stay. Part of why I recommend staying inside of Yellowstone is to help cut down on driving time since you’ll already be doing a lot of that once you’re in the park.
Dining in Yellowstone National Park
Whether you’re staying at a lodge, camping, or outside of Yellowstone, you’ll probably hit a point where you need to grab some food. Don’t worry, there are lots of dining options within the park! From fancy sit-down style restaurants to casual cafeterias, there are all kinds of food options to choose from.
Most of the dining options close down for the winter season since most of the park becomes inaccessible. If you’ll be visiting Yellowstone in the winter or off-season, make sure to do your research to know what will be open during your visit and plan your meals around what’s available.
